Minister's Young Designers Award Competition

MYDA

The MYDA Competition is a statewide design competition open to all Year 7 & Year 8 students in NSW schools.
The design brief of the competition is a very open one:

"To design a solution that meets an identified need"

Murray High School students have excelled in this annual competition since its inception.  We have had at least one student winning through to the state finals in each of these years.
Here are some examples of entries by students from Murray High School.

PAPERBOARD RECYCLE RACK - mock-up model and part of the research carried out on the recycling of materials.  An example of where the designer must first gain knowledge by researching the field in which they are designing.

VEST BACKPACK - prototype model and a design folio page of one of the initial ideas.  The need identified was to have a backpack suitable for a pre-school child that would not keep slipping off their little shoulders.  The final solution was a combination of two products, a backpack sewn onto a vest that buttons or zips up.

SCREENDOOR PROTECTOR - this design meets the identified need.  Research indicated that most damage to the fly wire of screen doors occurred in the area near the handle by people whilst opening the door.  Various materials and possible solutions were tested.  Packaging for the commercially produced product was also designed and produced.

TOYVAC - this solution identified a need that all parents of young children would identify with.  Small toys such as Lego blocks, matchbox cars, puzzles, etc are often left around on the floor because it is such an unpleasant task picking them all up.  Here is an example of the adaption and modification of an existing design (vacuum cleaner) to meet the needs of another situation.

YACHT RACE STARTING SYSTEM - various flags are used for signalling in yacht racing and often end up on the floor of the boat where they become dirty and damaged.  This device keeps the flags clean and ready to use.  Here is an example where a working model was too expensive or too difficult for the designer to construct and so a scaled "mock-up" model using less expensive materials was constructed to prove the design concept.
